NEC Department of Theatre Presents "By The Bog of Cats"
The New England College Department of Theatre presents By the Bog of Cats by Irish playwright Marina Carr on April 16, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and April 19 at 3:00 p.m. All performances will be held in the New England College Mainstage Theatre in the Science Building on Depot Hill Road in Henniker.
Written in 1998, By the Bog of Cats is set in rural Ireland where a tale of greed, betrayal, murder, and self-sacrifice unfolds. It is one woman’s struggle to find her place in a world where she has been abandoned by all those whom she has loved. In this loose retelling of Euripides’ Medea, Carr has mastered the elements of classical drama while spinning her own inventive and contemporary take on this ancient Greek tragedy.
Marina Carr attended University College Dublin and served as writer in residence at the Abbey Theatre and Trinity College Dublin. Her 1994 play, The Mai, was awarded the Best New Play from the Dublin Theatre Festival. In her earlier works, themes of gender stereotypes are portrayed in an almost absurdist style while her more recent works incorporate aspects of classical drama.
Reservations for tickets may be made by calling 603-428-2485. General admission is $7; students, NEC faculty and staff, and seniors $5. By the Bog of Cats is not appropriate for young children.
