NEC STUDENTS TAKE PART IN ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK
A group of students from New England College's Environmental Action Committee spent their spring break assisting with ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana. From March 7-15, 2008, the students worked with two non-profit groups, the United Church of Christ Good Shepherd Community Recovery and Outreach Center, a program assisting with land reclamation and property cleanup, and the Beacon of Hope Resource Center, a church-based group helping homeowners with property reclamation, wetland restoration, and tree replanting.
The goals of the spring break project included examining the environmental impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast and its social impact on affected communities, having students identify issues of environmental justice and social inadequacies, using civic engagement to understand civic responsibility, and to providing purposeful services to the community.
