“NEC Theatre has taught me that it takes hard work and dedication for a
show to be put on, and the staff and students are always willing to
help.”-Rachel Buck, 2010I'll never forget the day I met the entire theatre department. I wasn't even a theatre major, yet, everyone was extremely warm and welcoming towards me. I immediately
felt comfortable with these people who became my family over the next
few years. The entire community of New England College is a supportive
and friendly environment, but nothing compares to being a part of the
theatre community at NEC. As a student, I have learned and experienced
more than I could've ever imagined. The theatre professors at NEC
recognize the potential within each of the students, and over the
course of our education, the professors guide us to become the best we
can be. I am truly grateful and honored to be a part of the theatre
department at NEC. -Joe Paredez, 2010
“I chose theater here at NEC because of the close knit family that I saw the department was. The professors always provide individualized attention and are always there when you need them. I frequently have class with one of my professors and then wind up sitting with him at lunch too! There is a huge sense of connection. The professors not only know your name but also know exactly who you are. And I am even closer with my classmates! We do our theater and school duties but then on our free time, hang out and even celebrate holidays together! It's the perfect place to not only do what you love, but gain a family at the same time.” -Leanne DeRosa, 2011I started my freshman year off as a mathematics education major. In my first semester, I took Linear Algebra, Writing 1010, Multicultural Education, Urban Sprawls, and Seminar in Theatre:
Lighting. Being the slightly naïve freshman I was, I never understood
that my Seminar in Theatre: Lighting class
started half way through the semester and ended up in a class I was not
registered for. That class was Glenn Stuart’s Seminar in Theatre: Scenery. Glenn asked me if I wanted to stay and I looked at my credits and realized I could. By the end of my first semester,
I spent more time in the theatre, than doing my Linear Algebra
homework. I officially changed my major to theatre second semester of
my freshman year after realizing that Calculus II wasn’t creative
enough for me.-John Hanks, 2011
“Many people ask me why I came to NEC, and the one biggest/truest answer I can give is when I opened the website of the school, the picture that came up was the theatre with the directors on stage. I was hooked. I knew these people were personable and I would be able to grow and have fun. Those two things were all that mattered to me. Here at NEC the "diva status" that is often found in theater is no where to be found. Sure, people know that they are good, but they use that knowledge to help push their peers to greater heights. CTE was my first venue for my first show at school, and it has forever changed my life, as corny as that sounds, ill always remember it and Emma Laing. I made some long term friendships out of it, and lots of other great stuff too.” -Lauren Dummich, 2012
There is such closeness in our department. Theatre here
is not just a major but an opportunity to join a family. There is such
spirit in each and every individual in the theatre at NEC, that a
production is not only made up of all of the hard work of everyone- but
the heart and soul of each character that may grace the stage or speak
their voice over the head-set. You will instantly fall in love with the
outstanding passion of this department. -Katie Sullivan, 2012
