In keeping with our Russian literature theme for this year we will watch the Russian film version of War and Peace over three consecutive morning sessions followed by a discussion over lunch. Please read volume I (or more) of War and Peace and bring a picnic lunch. Beforehand, come join us for a tour of the Russian Icon Museum in Mass. on Wed., July 9. We are scheduled for the 11:00 AM guided tour. It will last slightly over an hour. We can car pool and decide on lunch once the group is formed.

BEAUTIFUL TO EYE & EAR:STRING INSTRUMENTS IN 16 –18th CENTURY EUROPE

Early craftsmen believed that musical instruments created by hand should be “beautiful to eye and ear” – unlike today’s machine-made, plastic, electrified, and amplified instruments. Slides will show how painters included beautiful lutes, viols, and harpsichords in their portraits and still life works. The sounds will be sampled on CD’s.
