B.A. in Linguistics, December 2003

Took initiative to develop an Independently Designed Major, focusing on linguistic sciences.  Studied etymology, historical development of language, as well as some physiology.  Gained broad exposure to, and developed interest in, the fields of language, science, history and anthropology.  Nominated to Who’s Who in American College Students three consecutive years.

 

Ningbo University, Ningbo, People’s Republic of China

In year-long study abroad experience, developed sense of personal strengths and weaknesses.  Learned to be adaptable and resilient in a rural environment without access to Western news or culture.  Studied elementary spoken and written Chinese.  2002 – 2003.

 

SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE

 

President, International Students Association, New England College.  Fall 2003

Nominated by peers to this leadership position after successful terms as VP and Events Coordinator.  Worked to enhance campus awareness of intercultural issues and events.  Delegated tasks to group members, and encouraged independent projects by group members.  Currently helping international students from Ukraine in fundraising and gift-giving effort for orphanage overseas. 

 

Student Instructor, Ningbo University, Ningbo, People’s Republic of China.  September 2002 – July 2003

Taught spoken English to first-year students in the English Department of the university.  Began each class with total readiness and preparation.  Received highly positive evaluations from class (available on request).

 

Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator, Earthplace Nature Discovery Center, Westport, CT.  Summers 1999, 2001, 2002

Passed entrance exam for the position in order to receive this state appointment.  Responded to calls concerning sick or injured animals; treated injuries, or administered euthanasia as necessary. 

 

Receptionist, Academic Advising and Support Center, New England College.  2000 – 2001

Quickly learned to interface with students, faculty and staff in a busy student support center.  Responded to questions from students in duress, and referred students to appropriate office professional.  Provided basic information on center policies regarding test-taking accommodations. 

 

Curriculum Intern, Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee, WI.  Summer 2000

After receiving initial curriculum topics, developed lesson plans for tours, patrons and school groups.  Adapted each lesson plan to meet Wisconsin Board of Education requirements, so that lessons could be used in public schools as well.
