Completing the Biology and Health Science major will educate students about the methods of science as a tool for understanding the natural world and prepare students for graduate education in the biological sciences or a career in the allied health field.

What is the major like?

Within our department, students may complete a Bachelor degree in Biology or a Bachelor degree in Health Science. The Biology major provides a broad foundation in the life sciences through coursework in evolution, diversity, ecology, microbiology, and genetics. The Biology major is intended for students considering graduate research programs and/or careers in industry, government, biomedical research, and field work. The Health Science undergraduate degree program is a pre-professional program that combines the foundation of the Biology major with preparation for a graduate program and/or career in a health-related field. Available tracks of study within the Health Science major include Pre-Med, Pre-Dental, Pre-Vet, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physician’s Assistant, and Pre-Nursing. Additional options include a Secondary Education Biology major (offered in collaboration with NEC’s education department) and individually-designed majors to match students’ interests.

What do Biology/Health Science majors do at NEC?

In addition to coursework, our students have plenty of opportunities for engaging and career-building experiences outside the classroom:

•    Field work and field trips are important components of many courses.

•    Most students complete one or more internships, either on or off campus.

•    Students collaborate with faculty on research  projects.

•    Additional opportunities are sponsored by student organizations  and the department.

What do Biology/Health Science graduates do after NEC?

The Biology and Health Science department has four faculty members who teach and build close mentoring relationships with students so that we can advise students on their major, requirements, schedule, and career and graduate pursuits.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE -INBRE
SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM 2012

New England College is a recipient of a National Institutes of Health INBRE ( IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence) grant which supports the NEC INBRE  Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).  SURP offers students research training opportunities at New England College with NEC professors/mentors in Psychology or Biology and Health Science for an 8 to 10 week period during May – August 2012.  The specific time depends on the research project.   The goal of the INBRE grant is to provide research opportunities that help encourage students to pursue graduate programs in biomedical research.  For more information see the NEC INBRE at the NEC webpage http://www.nec.edu/inbre and NH INBRE web page  http://nhinbre.org/.
