Post 9/11 Veterans Assistance

Are you waiting for your VA Education Benefits?

The Department of Veterans Affairs has made funds available for Veteran students who are still awaiting their education benefit claim to be processed. Eligible veterans can receive up to a $3000 advance, which will be recouped from future benefit payments.  If you are a student who applied for one of VA’s education programs and have not yet received your monthly benefit payment for the Fall 2009 term, you can request a one-time advance payment at your local VA Regional Office or  through VA’s website, www.va.gov.

The passing of the Post 9/11 Veteran's Assistance Act has provided new opportunities for Veterans and New England College to further enhance our existing program.  There are four principal groups under the new and older VA programs.

1.    Veterans with service prior to September 10th, 2001 or veterans with less than 90 days of active duty after September 10th.

2.    Veterans with more than 90 days active service after September 10th, but less than 36 months of active duty.

3.    Veterans with 36 months of service after September 10th

4.    Veterans who wish to transfer their educational benefits to eligible family members.

For group one (Veterans with service prior to 9/11 or less than 60 days of active duty post 9/11): New England College will continue its existing Russell Durgin Scholarship program to eligible veterans.  Currently a typical scholarship will be in the neighborhood of $16,000 for full time undergraduate programs per year.

For groups two, three, and four, those eligible for the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act (PVEAA):

1.    Under PVEAA the Veteran’s Administration will provide tuition benefits of $933 per credit.  In addition, the Veteran’s Administration Yellow Ribbon program will match dollar for dollar the amount contributed by New England College up to the entire amount of full time undergraduate tuition or $27,200 for the academic year 2009-2010.  The combination of the PVEAA and New England College’s matching dollars will allow a fully qualified veteran to attend New England College with no tuition and fee expense.  Additional VA funding is available for housing and for books and supplies.  New England College’s Russell Durgin Scholarship will also provide an additional scholarship of up to $5,000 to help defray other costs of attendance at the College.

2.    For veterans who wish to transfer their VA educational benefits to eligible family members as established under the PVEAA all of the above contributions from New England College will apply.

3.    For veterans who have less than full eligibility under PVEAA (group 2) NEC will provide scholarship assistance at lease up to the amount of the group 1 veteran.  The contribution by New England College will vary by individual based on the VA benefits available to the veterans.
