Amherst Uses Overtime to Beat Pilgrims
Amherst College men’s ice hockey team netted a goal with just 21 seconds remaining in overtime to beat the New England College Pilgrims 3-2 Saturday in Springfield. The loss was the second straight for the Pilgrims who fall to 13-7-3 overall and 8-6-3 in ECAC East action.
Amherst would grab the early lead with Ted Vickers netting his first goal of the season at the 7:55 mark. The Pilgrims wouldn’t waste much time responding as Filip Bjork would score his second goal of the season assisted by Mike Carmody and Jon Globke just over a minute later ot tie the game at 1-1. The Pilgrims would take their first lead of the game with just 33 seconds remaining in the first period as Per Thunberg would net a power-play goal to put NEC up 2-1 heading into the second.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless second period as Amherst would hold the edge in shots out shooting NEC 15-8. Amherst would tie the game just 5:40 into the third as Brendan Powers would score assisted by Andrew Schremp and Jack Baer. Each team would have a power-play opportunity late but neither team would convert sending the game into overtime tied 2-2.
The two teams would battle back-and-forth through much of the overtime but Amherst’s Joel Covelli would come through for the Jeffs as he would score the game-winner with 21 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Jeffs past the Pilgrims 3-2. In goal for NEC was Ron Baia who finished with 34 saves.
