Baseball beats Newbury in high scoring affair
New England College baseball snapped a four game losing streak beating the visiting Newbury College Nighthawks 28-21 Thursday afternoon in Henniker. The win improves the Pilgrims to 7-24 overall, while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 3-18 on the season.
The Nighthawks would start the scoring early with three runs in the first and tack on six more in the third to take the early 9-0 lead. The Pilgrims would battle back scoring four runs in both the third and fourth innings cutting Newbury’s lead to just 9-8 after four complete. The Newbury bats would not be silenced as the Nighthawks would pound out five hits and score six runs in the fourth to rebuild their lead. The slugfest would continue as NEC would plate two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth, trailing 16-17 heading into the seventh.
Newbury would score two runs in the seventh and hold the Pilgrims scoreless in the bottom half of the inning but the NEC offense would not be done for the afternoon as they would string together 11 hits scoring 12 runs and grabbing the 28-21 lead heading into the ninth inning. Newbury would threaten in the ninth but the Pilgrims would grab a ground ball double play and get the final batter to ground out capturing the 28-21 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Mike Caravella (Milford, N.H.) who finished with four hits including three doubles, four runs scored and five runs batted in. NEC’s Jordan Morgan (E. Weymouth, Mass.) finished with two hits including a homerun and four runs batted in and Scott Miller (Hillsborough, N.H.) finished with two hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored.
Leading the way for Newbury College was Evan Hudson (Sunapee, N.H.) who finished with two hits including a homerun, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Newbury’s Brian Fish (E. Brookfield, Mass.) finished with three hits and three runs batted in, while Ryan Dorgan (Methuen, Mass.) chipped in three hits and four runs scored.
