The New England College baseball team finished their 2008 season with two wins sweeping the visiting Plymouth State University Panthers Thursday afternoon. With the two wins the Pilgrims finish their season with an overall record of 9-26, while the losses drop the Panthers to 12-24 on the season.


 

In game one Plymouth State would get on the board first scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning.  The Panthers would hold the Pilgrims scoreless through three innings of play before NEC’s P.J. Crowley (Pawcatuck, Conn.) would hit his first career home run cutting Plymouth’s lead to 2-1 after four complete.  NEC would keep the Panthers off the board in the fifth and the sixth inning and grab two runs off a Jordan Morgan home run to take the 3-2 lead heading into the seventh. Plymouth would get a runner on in the seventh but NEC’s Phil Achee would come in out of the bullpen and grab the final out as NEC would capture the 3-2 win.

 

Leading the way for NEC was PJ Crowley who was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double and two runs scored.  Picking up the win on the mound for the Pilgrims was Matt Leger (Concord, N.H.) who allowed just two earned runs on four hits.

 

Leading the way for Plymouth State was Kevin Levandowski (Derry, N.H.) who doubled in a run and scored a run.  On the mound for Plymouth State was Joey Brayton (Medfield, Mass.) who pitched six innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and struck out five.

 

In game two it would be the Pilgrims who would grab the early lead as NEC would string together three hits, including a Jordan Morgan home run, and score three runs to take 3-0 lead after one.  Plymouth State would grab a run back in the top of the second but NEC would respond scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning building an 8-1 lead. The Panthers would storm back in the fourth scoring six runs on six hits and taking advantage of two Pilgrim errors to trail just 8-7 heading into the bottom of the fourth.  NEC would go on to grab a run back in the fourth and tack on five more in the fifth cruising to the 14-7 victory.

 

Leading the way for NEC was PJ Crowley who was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and three runs scored.   NEC’s Jimmy Lauzon (Manchester, N.H.) finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Chris Gagne (Rochester, N.H.) singled twice and had a run batted in for the Pilgrims.  Picking up the win on the mound for NEC was Adam Climo (Southport, Maine) who allowed one earned run on ten hits in six innings of work.

 

Leading the way for Plymouth State was Mike Moody (Manchester, N.H.) who was 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a run batted in.  Plymouth’s Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) was the only other Panther with multiple hits singling twice and scoring a run for the Panthers.
