Baseball drops conference opener to WNEC

New England College baseball was swept by conference power Western New England College on Monday afternoon in Springfield, Mass. With the two losses the Pilgrims fall to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in TCCC action, while the wins improve the Golden Bears to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.


 

In game one WNEC would explode for four runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth cruising to the 15-1 win.  The Pilgrims kept the Golden Bears within striking distance early allowing just three runs on three hits in the first three innings but the WNEC offense would warm up late recording eight hits in the next two innings. 

 

Leading the way at the plate for the Pilgrims was Jimmy Lauzon who was 3-for-3 at the plate and batted in the lone NEC run.  NEC’s Jimmy Hoyt and Mike Caravella each singled and Taylor Vesey scored a run for the Pilgrims. On the mound for the Pilgrims was Dan Pratt who allowed seven earned runs in four innings of work.

 

In game two WNEC would pound out 14 hits en route to a 13-3 win over the Pilgrims.  The Golden Bears would score three runs in both the first and the second inning to build an early 6-0 lead.  NEC would get on the board as they would string together singles in both the fourth and fifth inning cutting the WNEC lead to 8-3 heading into the sixth.  The WNEC offense would respond in the sixth plating five runs and eventually sail to the 13-3 victory.

 

Leading the way for the Pilgrims in game two was Jimmy Hoyt and Lucas Burgess who each finished with two hits.  NEC’s Scott Miller doubled in a run and Dan Pratt and Chris Gagne each singled in a run. On the mound for the Pilgrims was Matt O’Shaughnessy who allowed three earned runs on six hits in three innings of work.
