New England College junior Samantha Escobar (Rumney , N.H.) netted a goal and dished out an assist leading the Pilgrim field hockey team past Castleton State 3-0 Wednesday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 3-2 overall, while the loss drops the Spartans to 0-5 on the season.

The two teams would battle through the opening 16 minutes scoreless before NEC’s Heather DiNapoli (Concord, N.H.) would fire in a shot off a corner from Khatianna Evans (Wayne, Maine) at the 16:57 mark.

The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 2-0 just three minutes later as Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) would tip in a pass from Escobar.  The Castleton offense would have several scoring opportunities in the opening half as Sarah Flore would put two shots on net but Pilgrim defender Brianna Gerrior (Gloucester, Mass.) would come up with the defensive saves keeping Spartans off the board.

The Pilgrims would tack on a goal early in the second half as Escobar would net her team-high fifth goal of the season off a rebound just five minutes into the half.

The two teams would fight through the remainder of the game scoreless as the Pilgrims would finish leading the Spartans in shots 14-9 and in corners 11-9.
