Field Hockey escapes Gordon comeback
Sophomore forward Kate Carnaroli (Bellingham, Mass.) scored two goals leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots 3-2 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims extend their winning streak to six games improving to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action. The loss drops the Fighting Scots to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in TCCC play.
Carnaroli would start the scoring early for the Pilgrims as she would net her fifth goal of the season unassisted just 8:16 into the game. The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 2-0 just minutes later as Carnaroli would strike again off a corner assisted by Brianna Gerrior (Gloucester, Mass.) at the 11:39 mark.
NEC’s Jodie Dresser (Keene, N.H.) would give the Pilgrims a 3-0 advantage as she would net her team-high fifteen goal of the season with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Gordon’s offense would make a surge late in the opening period out shooting NEC 6-0 in the final 15 minutes but the Pilgrim defense would stand strong keeping the Scots off the board.
Gordon’s Ariadni Niavradaki (Breighton, Mass.) would get the Scots on the board early in the second half as she would rebound in a Mollie Sweeney (S. Hamilton, Mass.) shot cutting the Pilgrim lead to 3-1. Gordon would continue to pressure NEC as Alison Vigneau (Stowe, Vt.) would dribble by the NEC defense and net her second goal of the season at the 52:47 mark.
The Gordon offense would control much of the offense late in the game as the Fighting Scots out shot the Pilgrims 17-4 in the second half but NEC defender Holly Soule (Littleton, N.H.) would come up with two defensive saves in the second half holding Gordon to just the two goals.
Picking up the win in net for the Pilgrims was Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) who finished with 17 saves on the afternoon. In goal for the Fighting Scots was Alicia L’Heureux (Dudley, Mass.) who stopped seven shots on goal.
NEC returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they host conference opponent Nichols College at 3:30 p.m. Gordon College will battle league-leading Endicott College at home on on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
