New England College field hockey held off a late Worcester State surge to capture the 4-3 victory Thursday evening over the Lancers in Worcester. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 8-4 on the season, while Worcester State also moves to 8-4 overall with the loss.

The Pilgrims controlled much of the offense early in the opening period but Lancer keeper would hold the Pilgrims off the board through the opening 19 minutes.  NEC’s Elise Luccarelli (Holmdel, N.J.) would start the scoring for the Pilgrims netting her second goal at the 19:51 mark.

The Pilgrims would strike again just seven minutes later as Jodie Dresser (Keene, N.H.) would score off a feed from Marissa Ayotte (Feeding Hills, Mass.) putting NEC up 2-0.  NEC would stretch their lead to 3-0 just over four minutes later as Brianna Gerrior (Gloucester, Mass.) would score off another assist from Ayotte at the 30:59 mark.

The Pilgrims would carry the 3-0 advantage into halftime and strike early in the second as Dresser would net her second goal of the game just 2:13 into the second half putting the Pilgrims up 4-0.  Worcester State wouldn’t go down without a fight as the Lancers would score three goals in a 14 minute span cutting the Pilgrim lead to 4-3 with 5:40 remaining in regulation.  The Pilgrim defense would tighten up down the stretch, keeping the Lancers off the board and holding on for the 4-3 victory.

Leading the way for NEC was Jodie Dresser who finished with two goals and an assist.  NEC’s Marissa Ayotte dished out two assists and defender Holly Soule (Littleton, N.H.) registered three defensive saves.

Picking up the win goal for the Pilgrims was Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) who finished with 14 saves.
