Hytner leads Pilgrims past visiting Eagles
New England College’s Veronica Hytner (St. James, N.Y.) scored a goal and served up two assists leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Daniel Webster College Eagles 4-0 Thursday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims even their overall record to 5-5-1, while the loss drops the Eagles to 4-6-0 on the season.
NEC wouldn’t waste much time as senior captain Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass.) would net her team-high sixth goal of the season on a breakaway putting the Pilgrims up 1-0 just 14 minutes into the game. Sophomore Katie Haynes (Hudson, N.H.) would give the Pilgrims the 2-0 advantage scoring off a nice pass from Hytner just ten minutes later. The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 3-0 just before halftime as Hytner would score her first collegiate goal unassisted at the 41:52 mark.
The Eagles would battle tough throughout the second half allowing just one Pilgrim goal as senior Alex Sacco (Tewksbury, Mass.) would net a goal assisted by Hytner at the 50:33 putting NEC up 4-0. Leading the way for Daniel Webster was Rachel Schelhorn (Lebanon, Conn.) who finished with a shot on goal.
Picking up the shutout win in goal for NEC was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who finished the afternoon with a save. In goal for Daniel Webster was Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) who finished with an impressive 11 saves.
The Pilgrims return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when they travel to take on conference opponent Nichols College at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles continue conference play on Saturday, Oct. 11 as they host Newbury College at 12:00 p.m.
