New England College’s Jamie Davies (Plymouth, England) scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Pilgrims past the visiting Castleton State College Spartans 68-57 Wednesday night. The win is the first of the season for the Pilgrims who improve to 1-2 overall. The Spartans are still in search for their first win of the season falling to 0-3 overall.

Castleton State would open the game scoring the first five points and continue to roll leading by as many as seven points midway through the half.  The Pilgrims would try to chip away but Castleton would shoot 42% from the field and hold NEC to just 24% shooting as the Spartans would head into halftime with the 31-24 lead.

The Pilgrims would battle back in the second half of play tying the game at 35-35 just over three minutes into the second half.  The second half would see four ties and six lead changes but NEC would use an 8-0 run late to go up 63-55 with just 44 seconds remaining in regulation.  The Pilgrims would finish the game 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 42 seconds holding on for the 68-57 win.

In addition to Davies, NEC was led by Shane Hennessey (Plymouth, England) who recorded a double-double finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  NEC’s Rafael Salado (Boston, Mass.) chipped in 16 points for the Pilgrims.

Leading the way for Castleton State was Steve Velazquez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) who finished with 20 points and seven rebounds.  Castleton’s Marcus Hass (E. Montpelier, Vt.) was the only other Spartan in double figures finishing with 10 points.
