Men's Lacrosse Fall Short in Final Minutes
New England College men’s lacrosse would score two goals in the final three minutes but fall short losing to the Castleton State College Spartans 10-9 Tuesday afternoon in Fort Ann, N.Y. The Pilgrims are still in search of their first win of the season falling to 0-4 overall. This is third straight win for the Spartans who improve to 3-2 on the season.
The two teams would battle evenly through the opening quarter but NEC’s Colin Gordon (Manchester, Mass.) would net the lone goal in the second stanza to put the Pilgrims up 3-2 heading into halftime.
The Pilgrims would build a two goal lead up 5-3 just minutes into the third period but Castleton would outscore the NEC 4-1 in the final seven minutes of the quarter to head into the fourth up 7-6. Castleton would continue to control the offense early in the fourth scoring the first two goals to go up 9-6. The two teams would exchange goals as the Pilgrims would trail 10-7 with 6:44 remaining in regulation. NEC would not go away quietly as Colin Gordon would net his second goal of the afternoon to cut the Spartan lead to just 10-8 with 2:32 remaining. NEC’s Ryan Von Uffel (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) would get the Pilgrims within a goal scoring his third goal of the season at the 1:25 mark. The Pilgrims would continue to battle in the final minute but the Spartan defense would hold on late keeping the Pilgrims off the board holding on for the 10-9 victory.
In goal for NEC was Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) who finished with seven saves.
