Men's Lacrosse snaps three game losing streak
New England College men’s lacrosse would explode for six goals in the first quarter beating the visiting University of New England Nor’easters 12-5 Wednesday afternoon at Southern N.H. University. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC.) The loss drops the Nor’easters to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the TCCC.
UNE’s Steve Smith (Walpole, Mass.) would start the scoring early netting his sixth goal of the season just 55 seconds into the game putting the Nor’easters up 1-0. The lead would be short lived as the Pilgrims would respond scoring the next four goals, including two from Damian Carey (Medford, N.Y.) over the next nine minutes to grab the 4-1 advantage. UNE would net a goal with just under four minutes remaining in the quarter but NEC would respond scoring two goal in the final three minutes to head into the second quarter up 6-2.
Neither team would be able to net a goal in the second quarter of play as the Pilgrims would hold the slight lead in shots, out shooting the Nor’easters just 15-11.
NEC would control much of the tempo in the third quarter scoring three unanswered goals to head into the fourth quarter with the 9-2 lead. UNE would cut the NEC lead to 10-4 with goals by Nick Wilson (Souhegan, N.H.) and Mike Nawrocki (Baldwin, Md.) but the Pilgrims would pick up three fourth quarter goals cruising to the 12-5 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Matt Normandin (Saratoga, N.Y.) who finished with two goal sand two assists. NEC’s Carlos Gutierrez finished with a goal and three assists, while Kyle Burke (Winnetka, Ill.) chipped in three goals for the Pilgrims.Five different players scored for the Nor’easters.
Picking up the win in goal for New England College was Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) who finished with 11 saves in 47 minutes of work. In goal for UNE was Andy Briggs (Scituate, R.I.) who finished with 10 saves.
