New England College men’s soccer captured their first conference win of the season shutting out the Salve Regain Seahawks 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Newport, R.I. With the win the Pilgrims move above .500 on the season improving to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.

NEC’s Nick Manocchio (Chepachet, R.I.) would start the scoring as he would find the net off a touch pass from Dean Smith (Schwenksville, Pa.) 25:20 into the opening half. The Seahawks would have plenty of scoring opportunities in the opening half out shooting the Pilgrims 6-3 but NEC keeper Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) would make four first half saves keeping Salve off the board.

The Pilgrims would strike again in the second half as Dean Smith would net his first goal of the season off a corner from Pete Koskores (N. Andover, Mass.) at the 56:45 mark putting NEC up 2-0.  Again the Seahawk offense would have several opportunities late, including three corner kicks but the Pilgrim defense would hold strong keeping Salve Regina off the scoreboard and capturing the 2-0 shutout win.

Picking up the win in goal for the Pilgrims was Jon Mayo who finished with eight saves on the afternoon.
