NEC Men's Ice Hockey Explodes Against UMass-Boston

New England College men’s ice hockey exploded for three unanswered goals in the third period to beat the visiting UMass-Boston Beacons 5-2 Friday night.


The win improves the Pilgrims to 12-5-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the ECAC East.  The loss drops the Beacons to 8-11-1 overall and 3-10-1 in the ECAC East.
 
NEC would take the early lead as Filip Bjork (Stockholm, Sweden) would score his first goal of the season off a slap shot just 1:55 into the opening period. UMass-Boston would respond as the Beacon’s leading scorer Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) would net his 15th goal of the season assisted by Kris Kranzky (Glendora, Calif.) at the 8:47 mark.  Neither team would muster another goal in the first period sending the game into the second stanza tied 1-1.
 
The two teams would exchange goals once again in the second period as NEC’s Johan Granath (Stockholm, Sweden) would score at the 3:40 mark and UMass-Boston’s Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mo.) would answer scoring at the 4:38 mark.
 
The Pilgrims would take the lead in the third as Mike Mullen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) would score at the 6:37 mark off a nice pass from Bjork.  Mullen would strike again deflecting in a power-play goal at the 14:14 mark to put NEC up 4-2 with just under six minutes remaining in regulation.  NEC would get an additional insurance goal just seconds later as Bill McGinnis (Williams Lake, B.C.) would strike at the 14:40 mark putting the Pilgrims up 5-2.
 
Leading the way for NEC was Mike Mullen who netted two goals and Brian Pouliot (Hooksett, N.H.) who picked up three assists.  Leading the way for UMass-Boston was Kris Kranzky who assisted both of the Beacon goals.
 
Picking up the win in goal for New England College was Ron Baia (West Haven, Conn.) who finished with 29 saves.  In goal for UMass-Boston was Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) who also finished with 29 saves.
