NEC picks up shutout win over WNEC

New England College field hockey would net three unanswered goals in the second half leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Western New England College Golden Bears 3-0 Thursday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrim remain undefeated in conference play improving to 4-0 and move to 8-3 overall. The loss drops the Golden Bears to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play.


The two teams would battled through a scoreless opening half of play as Golden Bear keeper Lindsay Orszulak (Longmeadow, Mass.) would come up huge turning away 11 Pilgrim shots. 

 

 

The Pilgrims would break the scoring drought early in the second half as Khatianna Evans (Wayne, Maine) would put in a rebound off a shot from Ashley Simula (Bridgewater, N.H.) just 2:49 into the half.  

 

NEC’s Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) would give the Pilgrims some breathing room as she would score off a nice diving shot with just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation.  The Pilgrims would tack on a goal late as Samantha Escobar (Rumney, N.H.) would score her team-high tenth goal of the season off a corner from Evans with just 9:35 left on the clock.

 

NEC would finish the game out shooting Western New England 27-7 and hold the 11-5 advantage in corners on the afternoon.

Picking up the shutout win in net for NEC was Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) who finished with six saves.  Orszulak finished the game with 17 saves for Western New England.

 

New England College will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they travel to take on conference opponent Nichols College at 11:00 a.m. Western New England will host conference opponent Salve Regina on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
