Nichols College needs overtime to hand Pilgrims first TCCC loss
First year Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) scored nine and a half minutes into overtime to lift the Nichols College field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over New England College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon. Nichols remains undefeated on the year and improves to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in TCCC games after snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Pilgrims dating back to 2003. New England College drops its first TCCC game to dip to 4-1 in conference play and 8-4 overall.
Samantha Escobar (Rumney, N.H.) scored in the seventh minute to give the visiting Pilgrims an early lead that they held onto headed into halftime despite an 8-2 shot-on-goal deficit. Junior goalkeeper Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) all but stood on her head to keep the Bison off the board in the frame, making many spectacular saves.
MaryKate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) finished off a pass through the circle from Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) just over five minutes into the second half to knot the game, netting her third goal of the season at 40:36, but Roux kept the Bison off the board for the remainder of the frame with seven second-half saves.
Nichols held a 14-7 lead in penalty corners, and a 31-8 shot advantage.
Roux came up huge for the Pilgrims with 17 saves, while Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped two shots in the win.
Nichols continues TCCC action Tuesday night at home in a 7 p.m. game against Regis at Vendetti Field. The Pilgrims host Anna Maria Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Henniker, N.H.
