Pilgrims capture double overtime victory
NEC’s Dean Smith (Schwenksville, Pa.) lofted in a shot with just 48 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Pilgrims past the University of New England Nor’easters 3-2 Wednesday evening in Biddeford. With the win the Pilgrims solidify the #4 seed and home field advantage for the first round of the TCCC Playoffs improving to 10-5-3 overall and 8-3-2 in conference action. The loss drops the Nor’easters to 4-8-4 on the season and 3-7-3 in conference play.
The two teams would battle through the majority of the opening half without a score before NEC’s Peter Koskores (N. Andover, Mass.) would score his fourth goal of the season just six minutes before halftime putting the Pilgrims up 1-0.
UNE’s Kiel Hiller would score just six minutes into the second half knotting the game at 1-1. The Nor’easters would go on to grab the 2-1 lead in the 77th minute as Owens Evans would score an unassisted goal. The Pilgrims would respond just two minutes later as Koskores would convert on a penalty kick tying the game at 2-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Neither team would be able to find the net throughout the final minutes of regulation and the two teams would battle through nearly two scoreless overtime periods before Smith would score off a long clear by NEC keeper Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) with just 48 seconds remaining.
Picking up the win in net for the Pilgrims was Jon Mayo who finished with seven saves on the evening.
