Pilgrims drop season opener to Engineers
NEC field hockey opened their 2009 campaign Tuesday evening falling to MIT 2-7 in a non-conference match-up in Cambridge. The Engineers snapped a three-game losing streak to the Pilgrims as NEC dropped their first opener since 2001.
The Pilgrims would get on the board at the 25:59 mark as first-year forward Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) would score her first collegiate goal assisted by Samantha Escobar (Rumney, N.H.) MIT would get the goal back late in the half scoring with just over a minute remaining to head into halftime with the 4-1 advantage.
MIT’s Jessica Oleinik would come out of halftime and explode for three straight goals and Teruya would net her second of the game putting the Engineers up 7-1 with 11:39 remaining in regulation. NEC would muster just four shots on net in the second half, including an Emily Kuchta goal late.
NEC’s Brianna Gerrior (Gloucester, Mass.) came up huge defensively recording three defensive saves on the evening. In goal for the Pilgrims was Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) who finished with 11 saves.
NEC returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to take on non-conference opponent Clark University.
