Junior attack Matt Vozzolo (Somers, Conn.) scored three goals and had an assist leading NEC to victory in their season opener as the Pilgrims beat Neumann College 7-3 Saturday afternoon in Drexel Hill Pa.

Vozzolo would get the Pilgrims on the board early netting his first goal of the afternoon just four minutes into the game.  NEC’s Matt Carey would net the only other goal of the first quarter with 6:25 on the clock as the Pilgrims would head into the second quarter up 2-0.

NEC would continue to control much of the offense in the second quarter as they would outshoot Neumann 14-5 but it would be the Knights who would convert scoring two unanswered goals, knotting the game at 2-2 just before halftime.

The Pilgrims would regain their two goal lead in the third period as Vozzolo would record his second goal of the game followed by a man-down goal by John Gabriel (W. Nyack, N.Y.) putting the Pilgrims up 4-2 with a quarter left to play.

Neumann would cut NEC’s lead to just one goal early in the fourth but NEC would follow with three unanswered goals eventually cruising to the 7-3 victory. In addition to Vozzolo, the Pilgrims were led by Jacob Ryan (Victoria, B.C.) who finished with two goals. Picking up the win in net for the Pilgrims was Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) who finished with 14 saves.

The Pilgrims return to action on Tuesday, March 17 when they travel to take on Washington College at 4:00 p.m.
