Softball swept by Salve Regina
New England College softball was swept by Salve Regina University on Sunday afternoon, losing game one 1-5 and falling in game two 6-8. The losses drop the Pilgrims to 3-11 overall and 2-4 in the TCCC.
In game one Salve Regina would score all five of their runs in the top half of the third inning. The lone Pilgrim run came from sophomore Kristen Purdy who laced a two-out homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning. NEC’s Elizabeth Ross and Alexandria Sacco each singled for the Pilgrims. On the mound for NEC was Bethany Forshaw who pitched the complete game allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.
In game two Salve Regina would take the early lead scoring a run in the top half of the first inning. The Pilgrims would respond grabbing their first lead of the afternoon scoring three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1. The two teams would battle through the next three innings scoreless before Salve Regina would score three runs in the sixth and tack on four runs in the fifth to go up 8-3. NEC was not done as the Pilgrims would muster three runs in the home half of the seventh but Salve Regina would get out of the jam and hold on for the 8-6 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Sierra Thibeault and Samantha Hallam who each finished with two hits and a run batted in. NEC’s Amanda Lester stroked two hits including a double and Melinda Robbins doubled in a run for the Pilgrims. On the mound for NEC was Kristen Purdy who pitched the complete game allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits.
