Strong second half lifts Nor'easters past Pilgrims
New England College women’s soccer finished their 2008 campaign falling to the University of New England Nor’easters 1-3 Wednesday afternoon in Biddeford. With the loss the Pilgrims finish the season with an overall record of 7-10-1 and a conference record of 5-7-1. With the win the Nor’easters improve to 12-4-0 overall and 10-3-0 in conference play.
The two teams would battle through the opening 25 minutes scoreless before NEC’s Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass.) would net her ninth goal of the season off a nice pass from Colby Grant (Lynn, Mass) at the 25:53 mark putting the Pilgrims up 1-0.
NEC would carry the 1-0 lead into the second half before UNE’s Maggie Mahoney would net a goal just under ten minutes into the half knotting the game at 1-1. UNE would take the lead just six minutes later as Nor’easter Kristin Meza would convert on a penalty kick putting UNE up 2-1. NEC would try to battle back but UNE’s Michelle Epstein would give the Nor’easters some breathing room netting her seventh goal of the season with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
In goal for the Pilgrims was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who finished the afternoon with eight saves.
