Senior LaShawnda Wilson led the Pilgrims with 13 points and 16 rebounds in Thursday's loss to Gordon.
Women's Basketball edged by Gordon
Gordon College’s Heather DeKleine (Wayland, Mich.) led all scorers finishing with 22 points to lead the Scots past the Pilgrims 63-61 Thursday evening in Henniker. With the win the Scots improve to 4-14 overall and even their conference record at 3-3. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 6-11 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
The two teams would battle evenly through much of the opening half which saw four lead changes and two ties. The Pilgrims would be up three with just seconds remaining in the opening half but Gordon’s DeKleine would nail a jumper with just two seconds remaining in the half as the Scots would head into halftime down just 23-24.
Gordon would take the lead early in the second half as the Scots would go up 31-27 just two minutes in. The Scots would never relinquish the lead as they would use a 13-2 run midway through the half building a 52-39 lead with just eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Pilgrims would not go down without a fight as NEC battled back using a 9-0 run late to trail just a point with 41 seconds remaining. The Scots would come up huge on defense, including a block by Erin Thames (River Vale, N.J.) with just under 10 seconds remaining, edging the Pilgrims 63-61.
In addition to DeKleine, Gordon was led by Erin Thames who finished with a double-double recording 14 points and 11 rebounds. Gordon’s Rebecca Carroll (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points and Sara Schwanke ((Duxbury, Mass.) finished with 10 points for the Pilgrims.
Leading the way for NEC was LaShawnda Wilson (Burlington, Vt.) who finished with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. NEC’s Katie Plankey (Columbia, Conn.) chipped in 12 points and Kendall Wolfson (Lyndeborough, N.H.) finished with seven points and nine rebounds for the Pilgrims.
