Women's Basketball Edges Coast Guard
New England College’s LaShawnda Wilson (Burlington, Vt.) scored a team high 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Pilgrims past the visiting Bears of the Coast Guard Academy 54-50. With the win the Pilgrims better their record to 4-3 while the loss drops the Bears to 0-4.
Coast Guard would jump out to an early lead in the first half, leading the Pilgrims 23-16 with 10 minutes left to play in the half. A three-point basket by Pilgrims’ freshman Hallie Price (South Beach, Ore.) would bring NEC back within four and spark a 15-0 run for the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims entered halftime with a 32-27 lead.
The Bears would tie the game 38-38 on a layup by Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, Fla.). The Pilgrims would answer with a layup by Wilson, and the two teams would exchange baskets before the Pilgrims would increase their lead seven with just under four minutes left to play in the game.
The Pilgrims shot an impressive 47% and were 4-9 from three-point land. In addition to Wilson, senior Katie Plankey also finished in double figures with 15 points while dishing out five assists. Senior Ashley Hutton (Lebanon, N.H.) chipped in eight points.
Leading the way for the Bears was Martinelli who finished with a game with a game high 30 points and 13 rebounds, and Jennifer Tamminen (Irvine, Calif.) with nine points.
