Women's Basketball looses battle with Roger Williams
(Game recap courtesy of Roger Williams Sports Information) New England College women’s basketball is in search of their first conference win as the Pilgrims fell to the Roger Williams University Hawks 76-65 Saturday afternoon.
After Katie Plankey (Columbia, Conn.) knocked down a jumper on the Pilgrims’ opening possession, the Hawks responded with a 16-2 run, highlighted by a pair of steals and breakaway layups by Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) and Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.). Hallie Price (South Beach, Ore.) was able to halt the Hawk run with a three-pointer at the 14:53 mark, but from the Pilgrim offense stalled, as New England College was only able to muster five points over the next six minutes. Going into halftime, Roger Williams held a 45-28 lead, the most the Hawks have scored in the first half this season.
The Pilgrims opened the second half with a layup by Kendall Wolfson (Lyndeborough, N.H.) and a trey by Plankey to come within 12, but the Hawks continued to pace themselves offensively, stretching the lead to 21 off of a Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.) three pointer with 11 minutes to play.
From there, the lead never dipped below double-digits until late in the game, when New England College was able to close the gap to eight points with 38 seconds to play. Yet a pair of free throws by Nicole Atchue (North Grafton, Mass.) put RWU back up by ten en route to the 11-point win.
For the Pilgrims, LaShawnda Wilson notched a double-double of her own, with 20 points and ten rebounds. Plankey and Wolfson each chipped in with 14 points apiece.
