Women's Ice Hockey picks up shutout win over Cortland
New England College’s Stefanie Lewis (Windsor, Nova Scotia) netted two goals and picked up an assist leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Cortland State Red Dragons 4-0 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 5-6-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Red Dragons to 2-8-3 overall.
The Pilgrims would not waste much time getting on the board as Lewis would score her fifth goal of the season assisted by Jessica Donnelley (Casa Grande, Ariz.) just four minutes into the period. The Cortland defense would settle down holding NEC scoreless through the remainder of the first as the Red Dragon offense would battle back holding the 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless second period of play as NEC would outshoot Cortland 7-1. Red Dragon goalie Katie Double (Farmington, N.Y.) would come up with big saves as the Cortland defense would kill the NEC power-play three times and head into the third period down just 1-0.
The Pilgrims would extend their lead to 2-0 early in the third period as Sarah Tracey (Aurora, Ontario) would stuff in a rebound from a Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) shot at the 8:47 mark. NEC would give themselves some breathing room as Emily Tanguay (Manchester, N.H.) would net her first goal of the season just four minutes later putting the Pilgrims up 3-0. Lewis would tack on another Pilgrim goal with just under five minutes in regulation as NEC would cruise to the 4-0 shutout win.
Leading the way for Cortland was Ashley Meyer (New York, N.Y.) and Mallorie Maguire (Potsdam, N.Y.) who each finished with two shots on net.
Picking up the shutout win in net for NEC was Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine) who finished with 11 saves. In net for Cortland was Katie Double who made an impressive 27 saves for the Red Dragons.
The Pilgrims return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when they travel to take on non-conference opponent Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m. The Red Dragons will host ECAC West opponent Potsdam State on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
