New England College women’s lacrosse allowed eight goals in both the first and second half losing to the Smith College Pioneers 16-8 Thursday afternoon in Northampton. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 3-8 on the season, while the win improves the Pioneers to 3-5 overall.


 

Smith would open the game scoring three goals in a span of 43 seconds including two free-position goals by Sara Smyth to put the Pioneers up 3-0.  The Pilgrims would respond as both Jodie Dresser and Chelsea Bennett would score cutting the Pioneer lead to 3-2.  The two teams would continue to exchange goals throughout the open half of play as but it would be Smith who would out score the Pilgrims 3-1 in the final eight minutes of the half to head into intermission up 8-5. 

 

The two teams would continue to battle in the second half of play as the Pilgrims would trail just 10-8 with 16:27 remaining in regulation. Smith would tighten up on defense late and score six unanswered goals in the final 13:15 of play eventually cruising to the 16-8 victory.

 

Leading the way for NEC was Jodie Dresser, Brandi Vittum and Casey McFarland who each scored two goals for the Pilgrims.  In goal for NEC was Alexandra DiRico who finished with nine saves.
