Women's Soccer captures conference win
New England College women’s soccer opened conference play beating the Salve Regain Seahawks 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Newport, R.I. The win is the second straight for the Pilgrims who even their overall record to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 0-4-0 overall.
The two teams would battle through the opening 30 minutes scoreless before NEC senior forward Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass.) would strike scoring her third goal of the season in the 31st minute putting the Pilgrims up 1-0.
NEC’s Crystal Berry (Northfield, Vt.) would give the Pilgrims some breathing room scoring her second collegiate in the 66th minute giving NEC the 2-0 lead. Salve Regina would muster a goal late as Kendra Andrie (Pawtucket, R.I.) would sneak one by the NEC defense in the 80th minute cutting NEC’s lead to 2-1.
The Pilgrims would hold strong in the final 10 minutes of regulation keeping the Seahawks off the board to hold on for the 2-1 victory. Picking up the win in goal for NEC was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who finished with nine saves.
