Women's soccer captures shutout win
NEC’s Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass.) scored a goal and picked up an assist leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Regis College Pride 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in Henniker. The win improves the Pilgrims to 3-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC.) The loss drops the Pride to 1-6-0 overall and 0-3-0 in TCCC action.
The two teams would battle closely throughout much of the opening half before NEC’s first-year forward Crystal Berry (Northfield, Vt.) would float in a pass from Veronica Hytner (St. James, N.Y.) with just 2:30 remaining in the first putting NEC up 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Pilgrims would continue to control much of the offense in the second half out shooting the Pride 31-5 on the afternoon. NEC’s Debbie Lyons would give the Pilgrims some breathing room as she would net her team-high fourth goal of the season on a breakaway at the 59:36 mark giving NEC the 2-0 advantage. NEC’s Laurie Silva (Dorchester, Mass.) would extend the Pilgrim lead to 3-0 scoring her first goal of the season off a nice pass form Lyons at the 72:10 mark.
The Pride would have opportunities late as Kendra Creonte (Waltham, Mass.) would get two shots on goal but the Pilgrim defense would hold strong keeping the Pride off the board.
