A goal by New England College’s Veronica Hytner ( Saint James, N.Y.) with just over four minutes remaining in the first half was all the Pilgrims needed as NEC defeated the Golden Bears of Western New England College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pilgrims better their record to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the loss drops the Golden Bears to 2-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in TCCC action.

A foul called on Western New England College with 4:16 on the clock in the first half would grant the Pilgrims a penalty kick opportunity.  Hytner connected the shot for the lone goal of the game.  The Golden Bears would have numerous opportunities to tie the game in the second half, as they out shot the Pilgrims 12-3 in the second frame.  With the victory, the Pilgrims notched the first win against the Golden Bears in women’s soccer history.

In goal for NEC was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who recorded seven stops en route to the win.  In net for WNEC was Jessica Covino (Bristol, Conn.) who registered three saves.

New England College will be back in action on Tuesday, September 29 when they host conference rival Curry College at Laurie Cox Memorial Field for a 4:00 p.m. match-up.  Western New England College returns to action on September 30 as they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for a 4:30 p.m. game.
