Women's Soccer falls in conference opener
Salve Regina’s Liz Galla (Beacon, Falls, Conn.) and Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) each netted a goal and dished out an assist leading the visiting Seahawks past the New England College Pilgrims 3-0 in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Seahawks improve to 3-2-0 overall and capture their first conference victory of the season improving to 1-0-0. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the TCCC.
The Pilgrims’ best scoring opportunity of the half would come at the 29 minute mark as Amy Ordile (Winchendon, Mass.) would strike a ball that would ricochet off the post.
The Seahawks would extend their lead to 2-0 early in the second half as Jennifer Duval (Dudley, Mass.) would net her first goal of the season assisted by Galla at the 57:40 mark. Salve Regina would add another score just over ten minutes later as Birrell would put in a shot that would deflect off an NEC defender.
The Seahawk defense would hold the Pilgrims to just five shots and no shots on goal in the second half. Salve Regina would finish the game with the 5-1 advantage in corners and outshoot NEC 16-12 on the afternoon.
Picking up the win in goal for Salve Regina was Katie Vaudrain (Pawtucket, R.I.) who finished with five saves. In net for NEC was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who had four saves.
New England College will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they host non-conference opponent Green Mountain College at 4:00 p.m. Salve Regina will travel to take on Rhode Island College on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m.
