New England College women’s soccer captured their first win of 2009 as the Pilgrims shutout Mount Saint Mary’s College 1-0 Wednesday evening in Newburgh, N.Y. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 1-2-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Knights to 0-4-0 overall.

The Pilgrims would get on the board early as first-year forward Tamra Comerford (Fremont, N.H.)would net her first collegiate goal off a header by Colby Grant (Lynn, Mass.) 15 minutes into the contest.  The two teams would battle through the remainder of the half as the Pilgrims would head into halftime with the slight 8-7 shot advantage.

The Knights would record four early shots in the opening ten minutes of the second half but the Pilgrims defense would hold strong, as keeper Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) would record four of her five second half saves.  The Pilgrims would have a scoring opportunity as well in the second half as Comerford  would miss just wide on a breakaway.

Hughes picked up the shutout win in goal for the Pilgrims finishing with eight saves on the afternoon.  In addition to Grant, NEC senior Stevie Hayes (Hopkinton, N.H.) recorded an assist on the Pilgrims’ lone goal.
