Richard Wilkinson, internationally renowned expert on economic
inequality, will speak at New England College on Tuesday, October 4 at
6:30 p.m. The presentation and panel discussion will be held in the
Simon Center at 98 Bridge Street in Henniker and is free and open to the
public.
British researcher Richard Wilkinson has studied the
effects of economic inequality on health and a variety of social issues.
Wilkinson draws connections between educational outcomes, violence,
sustainability, and child wellbeing, and how public policies can make a
difference in building stronger communities. Wilkinson’s surprising
conclusions indicate that those with higher incomes fare better when
there is greater social equality than when there are large gaps between
income groups.
Richard Wilkinson is the co-author of the 2009 book, The Spirit Level: Why Greater Equality Makes Society Stronger.
He is the co-founder of the Equality Trust. Wilkinson studied at the
London School of Economics, the University of Pennsylvania, and the
University of Nottingham. He is currently Professor Emeritus, Social
Epidemiology, at the University of Nottingham.
Following the
presentation, a panel of experts will continue with a discussion on
economic inequality and its ramifications in a variety of fields.
Panelists are:
Cyndy Carlson, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, New England College
Dr. John Maguire, Chair and Founder of Maguire Associates, Trustee of New England College
Dr. Ben Tafoya, Lecturer, Political Science and Public Policy, New England College
