Program Overview

 
What does it take to lead an organization into the 21st century?  There is no evidence that organizational pressure will diffuse over the next few decades.  Kotter (1996), questions in an age of process reengineering, outsourcing, downsizing, mergers and acquisitions, why is it that organizations are achieving less than they originally hoped?  Success in the 21st century requires permeable organizations with the ability to respond quickly, effectively and collaboratively towards change.  In The Boundaryless Organization, the authors explain while organizations require boundaries, it is important to make sure the structure in fact does not restrict, but supports change and communication without the burden of a multi-level hierarchy.  Kotter (1996) explains stability is no longer the norm and most experts agree over the next few decades the business environment will become even more volatile.
 
Is strategy and structure enough for sustainability?  Or must today’s leaders look beyond the basics, taking into account crucial elements including employees and the necessity to alter contemporary practices.  While the challenges faced by organizations may be influenced by somewhat indirect forces, including size, age, or specific industry, does in fact not protect them from globalization.  There is no “one” solution – no “one size fits all” in addressing and solving the challenges faced in today’s flattening economy.
 
In an organization where there is faith in the abilities of formal leaders, employees will look towards leaders for a number of things. During drastic change times, employees will expect effective and rational planning, positive and effective decision-making, and regular, complete communication that is timely. Also during these times of change, employees will perceive leadership as compassionate, empathetic and dedicated to their welfare, while at the same time recognizing that tough decisions need to be made. The existence of this trust brings hope for a better future, and that makes coping with drastic change much easier.  Done correctly, leadership development sets the stage for organizational success.
