Open Door Theatre Presents Shakespeare’s King Lear
“As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods.
They kill us for their sport.”
The Open Door Theatre at New England College will present William Shakespeare’s King Lear on July 18 and 19 at 7:00 p.m. and July 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mainstage Theatre on 58 Depot Hill Road in Henniker.
The aging and misguided King Lear decides to step down from the throne and divide his kingdom among his three daughters. Deceived by false promises and rejecting his one faithful daughter Lear’s kingdom spirals into chaos and violence as he is driven into madness by the cruel treatment of his own family. Lear continues to be a resonant and relevant meditation on the indelible connection of family and the power of redemption. This modern dress production explores the very nature of human existence: love and duty, power and loss, good and evil.
King Lear is truly one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. It is both electrifying epic tragedy and gripping domestic drama: a tale of kings and princesses and fathers and daughters. But most of all it is about the fundamental human need to be loved and how blindingly and instinctively we rely on our families and how shocked and solitary we feel when that trust is betrayed.
Please join us for this profoundly moving play and help the Open Door Theatre continue its tradition of making classic plays relevant and accessible for 21st century audiences.
