NEC Men’s Ice Hockey Skates Visiting St. Anselm College to a Tie
HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College men’s hockey would skate the visiting St. Anselm College Hawks to a 2-2 overtime tie Sunday afternoon.
With the tie the Pilgrims are now 8-12-3 overall and 6-8-2 in ECAC East action, while the Hawks move to 11-8-3 on the season and 7-7-2 in ECAC East play.
St. Anselm College would open the scoring 4:44 into the opening period as Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) would lift a pass from Bryan Luther (Scituate, R.I.) over the shoulder of NEC goalie Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario).
NEC would knot the game at 1-1 at the 12:47 mark as Johan Qvarfordt (Sodertaje, Sweden) would net his sixth goal of the season putting in a pass from Jonathan Boxill (Bracknell, England)
The Hawks would go up 2-1 seven minutes into the second period as Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) would fire in a pass from Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) recording his third goal of the season. The Hawk lead would be short lived as Qvarfordt would net his second goal of the afternoon rebounding in a Ben Souders (Downington, Pa.) shot, tying the game at 2-2.
Neither team would muster a goal in the third period of play as the Pilgrims outshot the Hawks 9-3 but could not find the goal.
The overtime period would see much of the same as St. Anselm would record three shots on net, while NEC would post two shots on net.
St. Anselm finished the game holding the slight 32-28 advantage in shots on net.
Sirman finished the game with 30 saves. St. Anselm College’s Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) posted 26 saves in net for the Hawks.
NEC returns to action on Friday, Feb. 15 when they host ECAC East opponent University of New England. St. Anslem will take the ice on Friday, Feb. 15 when they host ECAC East foe University of Southern Maine.
