NEC Women’s Basketball Beats Newbury College in Home Opener
HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College women’s basketball would jump out to an early 13-0 lead and never falter beating the visiting Newbury College Nighthawks 84-44 Monday evening.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 2-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 1-2 overall.
NEC would jump out to the early lead scoring the first 13 points of the game and continue to dominate much of the opening half offense up 24-4 midway through. The Pilgrim defense would force 19 Nighthawk turnovers as NEC’s duo of Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) and Kate Levy (Woods Hole, Mass.) would each finish the half with 13 points giving NEC the 46-13 halftime lead.
The Pilgrims would build their lead to as many as 54 but the Nighthawks would battle in the second half totaling 31 points eventually falling 84-44.
NEC’s Kayla Lawlor led all scorers finishing with 16 points, while Kate Levy and Markey Flewelling (Portsmouth, N.H.) chipped in 15 points each. NEC’s Allison Beck (Potomac, Md.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Katrina Muska (Brimfield, Mass.) dished out a game-high seven assists.
Leading the way for Newbury was Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) who recorded a double-double, scoring a team-high 12 points and finishing with a game-high 10 rebounds. Newbury’s Katelyn Roeser (Nashua, N.H.) was the only other Nighthawk in double figures finishing with 11 points on the evening.
NEC returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 25 when they host non-conference opponent Anna Maria College. Colby-Sawyer will take the court Tuesday, Nov. 27 when they travel to take on non-conference foe Green Mountain College.
