NEC Women’s Lacrosse Opens NAC Play With Victory Over Husson University
HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College women’s lacrosse opened North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a victory over the visiting Husson University Eagles 14-4 Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 2-5 on the season and pick up their first NAC win of the season. The loss drops the Eagles to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in NAC play.
The two teams would battle scoreless through the opening 13 minutes before NEC’s Eleni Hatsis (Norwalk, Conn.) would put in her seventh goal of the season unassisted at the 16:44 mark. Husson would knot the game at 1-1 just two minutes later as Caitlyn Stauffer (Brookfield, Conn.) would put in a pass from Haley Huntington (West Gardiner, Maine).
The Pilgrims would then apply the offensive pressure closing out the opening half with four unanswered goals, including three by senior Meredith Merce (Ocean, N.J.), to head into halftime with the 5-1 advantage.
The two teams would exchange goals early in the second half of play before the Pilgrims would go on a 4-0 run building their lead to 10-2. Husson would battle back cutting the lead to 10-4 but again NEC would respond closing out the contest with four straight goals en route to the 14-2 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Meredith Merce who led all scorers with five goals and two assists. NEC’s Eleni Hatsis finished with two goals and two assists, while Sarah Merrill (Dover, N.H.) scored twice and dished out an assist.
Leading the way for Husson was Caitlyn Stauffer who scored two goals for the Eagles.
NEC finished the game out shooting Husson 33-19.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Rebecca Harvey (Natick, Mass.) who finished with seven saves. In goal for Husson was Chelsea Kondratowicz (Kingston, N.Y.) who stopped 13 shots.
NEC returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 when they host non-conference opponent Smith College. Husson will battle non-conference in-state foe Colby College on Tuesday, April 2 at home.
