Women's Ice Hockey Skates Southern Maine to a Draw

HENNIKER, N.H.—Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.) scored her second goal of the game for the University of Southern Maine with 7:23 remaining in regulation, resulting in a 4-4 overtime tie with the Pilgrims of New England College in ECAC East women's hockey action.


With the tie, the Pilgrims set their record to 2-1-2 and 1-1-1 in ECAC East action, while Southern Maine plays its first tie of the season and now sits at 1-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.


The Pilgrims posted the first goal of the game on the power play as Morgan Braniff (Tustin, Calif.) connected on a pass from Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) 3:25 into the first period. The Pilgrims held the lead until the 16:59 mark, when Lane registered her first goal of the game, assisted by Shannon Cronin (Wakefield, Mass.).


Southern Maine's Sarah Timmons (Fall River, Nova Scotia) put the Huskies up 2-1 early in the second period, but NEC responded with back-to-back goals by Rachel Vigliano (Monroe, N.J.) at 10:03 and 11:56 to give the Pilgrims the 3-2 edge.


With 32 seconds remaining in the second period, Southern Maine evened the score at 3-3 to as Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) capitalized on assists by Julia Pearl (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Kaleigh Heath (Jericho, Vt.)


The Pilgrims took the 4-3 lead in the third period as Kate Kellar (Cheshire, Mass.) collected a pass from the Moore on the wing and tapped it past Southern Maine goaltender Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen. Minn.) at the 7:30 mark.  Vigliano also assisted on the goal.
The Pilgrims would only retain the lead for 4:17, as Lane redirected Davis's shot from in between the faceoff circles to even the score at 4-4.


The Pilgrims posted three shots on goal in the five minute overtime period, but Bergstrom stopped them all to solidify the 4-4 overtime tie.
Bergstrom totaled 35 saves in net for the Huskies, while NEC goaltender Lauren Hopps (Green Bay, Wisc.) posted 14 saves.
Both teams scored two power play goals on the evening; Southern Maine in seven attempts while NEC recorded eight attempts.
