Dr. Hrair Balian
Dr. Hrair Balian, accomplished lawyer and noted expert on the Middle East, will speak at New England College on Thursday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the NEC Art Gallery on Main Street in Henniker. The presentation, “The U.S. and the Interlocking Conflicts in the Middle East,” is free and open to the public.
Dr. Balian, a 2009 honorary degree recipient from New England
College, has devoted most of his professional life to public service
and has written extensively on the topic of human rights. He founded
the Covcas Center for Law and Conflict Resolution in Geneva,
Switzerland in 1991 and in 1996 served as the Director of the Bosnia
Project and International Crisis Group in Sarajevo. From 1990-2003 he
was head of the Election Section for the Office for Democratic
Institutions and Human Rights in Warsaw. He has also served as the
Deputy to the UN Secretary-General’s High Representative for the
Elections in Cote d’Ivoire. He has carried out assignments in Eastern
Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, West
Africa and other areas in transition. Dr. Balian is currently the
Director of the Conflict Resolution Program at the Carter Center in
Atlanta, Georgia.
