As stated by Emily, she was inspired by the book, The Freedom Writers Diary, as well as the film, Freedom Writers (based on the book).  Emily began mentoring 6th and 8th graders in basic poetry and shortly thereafter decided that she wanted to continue to help people and be someone that others look up to.  “I would prefer to do something I love and get by than do something I hate for money,” according to Emily.

A past professor recommended NEC to Emily, and the rest is history.  The Office of Admission staff, as maintained by Emily, was bubbly and energetic.  “Everyone in the Office of Admission knew my name and my story.  They went above and beyond.”  Also, the first student Emily spoke to on campus was really warm and welcoming.  The environment at NEC is comfortable and the community fosters “fuzzy feelings,” says Emily.  The best part about being a part of the NEC community is that “you never have to question that people care that you’re here, safe, and happy.”

Emily’s advice to prospective transfer students – “Don’t be afraid to apply due to finances.”  The Office of Admission staff and Student Financial Services “will work with you to get you whatever support you need (whether it is emotional, financial, etc.).”  Also, don’t overlook NEC because it is small, Emily says.  The campus, faculty, staff, and students are full of character and personality.   Everything at NEC is more individualized and personal which makes for a first-rate and unique experience.   “Bigger is not always better!”

Emily hopes to work with low-income youth at a high school in the greater Concord, NH area post-graduation from NEC.  She would also like to pursue a masters degree, eventually.  Emily’s final thoughts/words – “I’m passionate about this campus and the people here, and I can’t emphasize that enough.  I feel so blessed to be here and to be wanted here.”
