1.    Do I have to live on-campus?

New England College does have a residential requirement. Students must live on-campus for 4 semesters. There are exceptions made for those who live within a thirty mile radius of campus. Living on-campus greatly enhances the student experience and helps you to connect with your peers in and out of the classroom.

2.    When will I receive my assignment?

Housing information is mailed during last week of July/first week of August. Your assignment letter will list your roommate, his/her name, his/her address, and his/her phone number. It will also include your box number (campus mailing address) and the price of your assigned room and meal plan.

3.    How do you choose my roommate?

Roommate matching is not an exact science. We endeavor to match roommates based on similar interests and preferences submitted on the housing contract. It is very important that you fill out the contract thoroughly and honestly.  If you tend to let your room get messy, don’t say you are neat in the hope of getting a roommate to clean up after you. This will only create more problems down the road!

4.    Is it possible to request a roommate?

Yes. If you have a friend who is planning to attend NEC, you may request to room together. You must mutually request each other on the housing contract. Please note: there are some cases where requests may not be honored. Some coaches do not want their players rooming together. Check with your coach to see if s/he has any specific requirements.

5.    What if I don’t like my roommate?

We encourage you to keep an open mind about getting along with your roommate until you actually get to school and meet with him/her. Most roommate issues are resolved in the first two weeks of school. What seems like an incompatible match can turn out to be a life-long friendship! The Residence Life and Housing staff are trained to assist with roommate conflicts quickly and effectively. Your first point of contact for any issue should be your Resident Advisor (R.A.). Your R.A. can help you through the situation. The Graduate Hall Director (GHD) and Area Coordinator (AC) supervise the R.A. They can help you if things are not being resolved through your R.A.. If all else fails, you may proceed through the room change process. If you are aware of a vacancy where you would prefer to live, speak with your GHD or AC. They can facilitate this process for you. There is a two-week freeze on room changes at the beginning of each semester. The Residence Life and Housing staff will help you each step of the way!

6.    Can I have a single room?

Single rooms are in high demand on campus.  We do not have a large number of single rooms available. Most have been selected by returning students through the room selection process. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate most first-year student requests for singles.

7.    I am bringing my computer. How do I access the internet?

Information regarding how to utilize the campus network is supplied by the Information Technology department. The IT website has an abundance of information regarding the software necessary to safely connect to the College’s internet. http://www.nec.edu/about-nec/helpdesk

8.    I am also bringing a TV. Is there cable?

Yes. Extended Basic Cable service is included in the room rate and provided by Comcast.

9.    Ok, I need to coordinate stuff with my new roomie. Can you give me their contact information?

Absolutely! Your assignment letter will contain your roommate’s name, address, phone number, and email address.  We encourage you to contact them as soon as you receive the letter to coordinate who is bringing what to the room. Since assignment letters are sent as soon as the assignment process is completed, we will not be able to tell you your roommate’s name or any other information prior to your receiving the letter.

10.    Do I have to bring curtains or drapes for my room?

Blinds or shades, as well as fire-resistant drapes are provided in each room. Due to the stringent fire codes, students are not permitted to bring their own curtains.

11.    What furniture is provided?

Each student is provided with a desk, a desk chair, a dresser, a mattress, and a bed frame. There are also closets or a wardrobe in each room. Again, due to stringent fire codes, students are not permitted to bring their own furniture.

12.    I don’t know what size sheets I need. How big is the bed?

All beds are STANDARD twin. If you are 6’2” or taller, you may request a twin extra long bed on your housing contract.

13.    Can I put posters and pictures up on my walls in my room?

You can! We encourage you to decorate your room to make yourself feel at home.  Please keep in mind that putting holes in the walls or doors is NOT permitted. You should use products like poster tack or tape that will not remove the paint from the walls.

14.    I have a lot of stuff. Where do I keep it?

There is plenty of room for seasonal clothing and other supplies in your room. However, these are residence halls designed to house many students. As such, they do not have the same space you are accustomed to having at home. You should bring only what you need with you until your first visit home. If you and your roommate find that you can fit more “stuff” in your room, you can always bring it up later!

15.    Are the laundry machines coin-operated?

No. The washers and dryers are operated by a laundry card system. As a new student, you will be provided a laundry card. You can then add money to the card for use in the halls. To load money onto the card, or purchase a replacement card, visit the laundry card machines in Charter Hall or the Simon Center.

16.    Are first-year students allowed to have cars on-campus?

Yes, however, it is not necessary. The NEC campus is very walkable. If you choose to bring your car, you will be required to purchase a parking permit that will designate your parking area. If you park in a lot other than your assigned lot, you will be subject to ticketing.

17.    What if I don’t have a car?

It’s ok! The NEC campus is very walkable. You can get wherever you need to be within 5 minutes from the center of campus. Additionally, the Office of Student Involvement provides a weekly shuttle to Concord. The shuttle departs campus every Friday at 5 p.m.  You do need to sign up in advance, as spots fill up quickly!

18.    Can I bring my pets to live on-campus with me?

If your pet is a non-meat-eating fish that can fit in an aquarium less than five gallons, then yes. All other pets must remain at home.

19.    Can first-year students drink?

You may drink all of the juice, soda, milk, and water you want! If you mean alcohol, then you’ll have to answer another question: Are you 21 years old or over? If the answer is no, then drinking alcohol is illegal in the State of New Hampshire.

20.    Can I smoke in my room?

All of the buildings on-campus are smoke free, this includes the residential facilities. Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas on campus grounds. Designated smoking areas are 25 feet from the buildings.

21.    Ok, so I have my assignment. I called my new roomie. I’ve packed everything I need. I’m super excited to be a Pilgrim! So, when can I move into my room?

All new students move into their assignments on a date to be determined. You will receive the specific date and time of arrival in your assignment letter.

Residence Life staff are still in training in August, building preparation is still underway. Therefore early arrivals are not possible for those other than athletes in pre-season or students attending Dynamic Orientation. If you believe that an unavoidable circumstance warrants an early or late arrival, please email the information to reslife@nec.edu. We will do our best to accommodate your request. We cannot guarantee an accommodation, so you should have a contingency plan. Please do not email your request prior to receiving your assignment letter, and include your name, address, phone number, and email address.

22.    What if something breaks or needs repair in my room?

Contact your R.A..  S/He will verify the request and submit a work order to Campus Facilities on your behalf.

23.    My parents, guardians, and friends want to send me care packages. What is my mailing address?

All NEC students are assigned a mailbox number. You will want to have your mail addressed as follows:
        First Name Last Name
        New England College
        NEC Box #
        98 Bridge Street
        Henniker, NH 03242
