Hybrid Doctorate of Education
New England College’s Doctorate of Education (EdD) program is designed in the cohort model to help you become the expert in your area of interest, in a collaborative, supportive, team environment with other working professionals. The hybrid delivery model has two tracks: K-12 Leadership and Higher Education Administration.
When you join our community, you will be part of a program that prepares educators to take leadership roles in improving educational systems and advancing student learning and success. You will get to start working on your dissertation in the first course of this three-year program, so that your research can be applied immediately in your work environment.
Through our three-year, low residency, cohort-based structure, you will engage with students, faculty, and other members of the education community in collaborative inquiry into issues that span our education systems. This unique combination of deep understanding, expanded vision, and diverse professional networks, positions you for innovative, entrepreneurial leadership in a complex and changing world, offering you the opportunity to become an expert in an area about which you are passionate.
For those interested in K-12 Leadership, most courses in that track can be used towards New Hampshire certification in the areas of principal, superintendent, business administrator, curriculum administrator, special education administrator, and reading/writing specialist. The number of courses that need to be taken, in addition to the doctoral courses, vary depending on the certification.
New Hampshire Certification Options
New England College offers a unique opportunity to apply courses from the doctoral program to New Hampshire K-12 administrator certifications. Many of the doctoral program courses apply to one of the following certifications:
- Curriculum Administrator
- Reading and Writing Specialist
- School Business Administrator
- School Principal
- School Superintendent
- Special Education Administrator
In addition to the doctoral courses, students will also need to take additional courses for their intended certification with the specific number of types of courses dependent upon the respective certification.

60 Credits | 3 Years | 7-Week Terms
For incoming students, coursework begins in July. You can review our course map below for specific courses each term. The Higher Education Administration and Pre K-12 Leadership programs have 7-week terms that meet approximately once a month (except May-July) at our Henniker, NH campus with a week long residency in August. The program is fully online and has a week long virtual residency in the summer.
Our program has 7-week terms that meet approximately once a month (except May-July) at our Henniker, NH campus with a week long residency in August. We’ve designed our program this way so that you, as a student, will be part of a community of learner-scholars that you will support and be supported by throughout your doctorate journey.
Cohorts meet during two weekends in each seven week course, usually the second and sixth weeks of each course. Each summer, the cohort meets to engage in coursework and dissertation development. You will demonstrate proficiency in meeting the program outcomes through the development of a capstone project, the completion of the dissertation, and the creation of an action plan for future growth.
You will meet with your cohort during the following weekends, as well as a summer residency. Our intensive weekend meetings are held on Friday from 4pm-8pm and Saturday from 8am-5pm (students will not be required to spend the night). These meetings involve coursework, advising, group meeting times, speakers, and other activities. Friday dinner along with Saturday breakfast and lunch are included.

Students, faculty, and visiting practitioner-scholars collaborate throughout the term using the Blackboard Learning Management system, web-conferencing software, and other technologies. The August residency is week-long and incorporates orientation activities, comprehensive project presentations, dissertation workshops and presentations, and other educational programs.

- Official transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions other than NEC
- Two letters of recommendation which attest to your professional ability as well as your qualifications for the Doctorate of Education
- Please submit a 1,600 word personal statement which outlines your professional goals, any background and experiences that have led to your decision to pursue a doctorate.
All students enrolled in our Doctorate of Education program will receive an NEC ID and accounts for an email address and to the Blackboard Learning Management system. With the NEC ID, you will be able to access these accounts and have access to the library databases while on campus and from home. You will also have access to consortium libraries throughout the region. Library, IT staff, and Student Support Services are accessible by phone or email throughout the course of the year.
