New England College President’s Speaker Series Hosts Former Congressman, Ambassador, and Author Richard N. Swett
Event to Examine the Relationship Between the Nature of Design and Leadership.
New England College is pleased to announce the next President’s Speaker Series event which will kick off the spring semester with the Honorable Richard N. Swett, former New Hampshire Congressman and former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. The event will be held in the Simon Center Great Room beginning at 5:30 p.m. In addition to his distinguished career in public service, Ambassador Swett has written a groundbreaking book about the unique civic leadership strengths of the architecture profession, Leadership by Design: Creating an Architecture of Trust. Drawing upon fascinating stories from the past and present, as well as from his own singular experience as the only architect to serve in Congress in the 20th century, Swett has produced a compelling volume that is both inspiring and instructive.
In Congress, Ambassador Swett was a member of the Public Works and Transportation Committee; the Committee on Science, Space and Technology; the U.S. Congressional Delegation for Relations with the European Parliament; and the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. He authored the Transportation for Livable Communities Act, coauthored the landmark Congressional Accountability Act, and introduced bills on energy conservation and use of renewable energy. In the private sector, his experience includes architectural design, project and corporate management, and development. Swett was a state chair for the U.S. Olympic Committee; he also was a contributing author for the book, A Nation Reconstructed: A Quest for the Cities That Can Be. Twice he has been awarded the Presidential citation by the AIA, in addition to numerous other awards and honorary degrees.
“Ambassador Swett is a recognized leader in politics, diplomacy, and business,” said New England College President Dr. Michele Perkins. “His insights into the importance of civil discourse promises to be both insightful and inspiring. Our students and community guests will surely benefit from this moderated conversation, and we look forward to hearing from Ambassador Swett as he discusses his vision for leadership and the importance of public discourse.”
