NEC Theatre: Antigone | November 20–22

November 20, 2025

New England College Theatre presents its fall 2025 play, Antigone, by Sophocles and translated by Anne Carson.

“If you find you’re confusing evil with good…watch out.”

What would you do when torn between what’s dictated and what’s right? This question has been explored onstage for 2,500 years in Antigone by Sophocles, in which a young girl stands up for her beliefs in the face of an uncompromising leader. The story has resonated in various adaptions, notably during World War II in Vichy France and in New York as part of peace protests in the 1960s. In her new translation, Canadian poet Anne Carson pulls the Greek heroine across the millennia, making her plight fresh and familiar while retaining the musicality, humor, and pathos of the original text.
